Why Does My Car Smell Like Gas?

If your car smells like gas while driving or parked, it’s essential to get it serviced. Not only can a gas leak in your vehicle waste money and reduce performance, but it can also be a serious safety hazard to you, your family, and others on the road. Here are a few reasons your car might smell like gas and ways to identify a possible gas leak.

3 Possible Causes Of A Gas Smell In Cars

Unless you’ve filled up your gas tank moments before, there’s no reason you should every smell gas in your car. In most cases, the scent of fuel is a sign of a leak somewhere between the gas tank itself and the engine. Here are a few things to check:

  1.  The Gas Cap. A missing, loose or damaged gas cap can emit gas vapors, especially while driving. While most modern vehicles have a sensor that detects a loose or missing gas cap, it may not accurately sense a broken seal. Inspect your gas cap for a cracked or damaged rubber seal.
The Fix: Replace or repair the gas gap.

  2. Gas Leak. Gas leaks from the fuel tank, fuel line, or engine itself can cause strong smells while driving and when parked. Gas leaking from the bottom of your can be tough to spot on the move but watch for wet spots in your driveway or place a large piece of cardboard beneath your car to collect evidence of leaking gas or other fluids.  If your car smells like gas outside, a leak is the most likely culprit.
The Fix: Patch or replace the fuel tank or fuel line.

  3. Loose Spark Plugs. Worn, loose or faulty spark plugs can burn fuel inefficiently, causing the O-ring in the combustion chamber to emit fumes. One of the signs of loose spark plugs is when your car smells like gas when starting.
The Fix: Replace your spark plugs and inspect the O-ring for damage.
