The Ultimate Traverse City Road Construction Map

Avoiding the infamous road construction in Traverse City saves drivers time and frustration and keeps workers safe. The Grand Traverse County Road Commission is committed to keeping local and visiting motorists abreast of future, ongoing, and recently completed road construction projects in Traverse City and county-wide.

Ever wondered where road work is underway? There’s a map for that!

Traverse City’s Road Construction Map

First published online in the spring of 2021, the Grand Traverse Country Road Commission (GTCRC) documents road construction projects to improve traffic conditions and keep motorists safe. The Interactive Road Construction Map was developed by the combined efforts of the Traverse Transportation Coordinating Commission, or TTCI.

The map is updated by the GTCRC and highlights future, current, and recently completed projects across the county. It also provides important information about the improvements being made, such as:

  • Chip seal

  • Crush and shape

  • Replacement

The map also includes timeline and detour information to help drivers plan their trips accordingly.

Why Road Construction Maps Matter

Having reliable road construction maps helps Traverse City drivers avoid active construction projects, improves the overall traffic flow across the county, and saves construction workers. Reducing the volume of cars utilizing construction zones greatly lowers the risk of harming vulnerable workers in busy, often congested work zones. See alternative routes that avoid road projects and keep workers safe whenever possible.

Budget Limitations Could Impact Road Quality

Current and future projects have seriously strained the GTCRC budget in 2024. Estimates show the price tag to improve Grand Traverse County roads to “good” condition will be $221 million, a number that far outpaces the commission’s current budget. The commission, Grand Traverse County commissioners, and other local experts expect a new millage to make the ballot soon.
