The Best Used SUVs Under $30,000
To be clear, $30,000 is the upper end of what we consider an affordable used car. That said, most of the models below are used at substantially lower price points depending on the precise year and trim package.
The Most Fuel-Efficient Used SUV: Toyota RAV4
It is tough to beat the RAV4 for price, reliability, and low maintenance costs. The RAV4’s fuel economy is consistently near the top of its class, with 27 city and 35 highway for the internal combustion engine (ICE) version. You’ll find 2020 or newer ICE models priced between $20,000 and $35,000 at fair prices.
The RAV4 Hybrid gets 41 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway, making it about as efficient as a mid-sized SUV can be. For model years 2020 or newer, it will cost between $25,000 and $35,000, though you’ll also find some outliers.
The Most Reliable Used SUV: Honda CR-V
Honda makes some of the most reliable used cars on the market, and that certainly includes the CR-V. Known for its comfortable interior and competitive price points, you’ll find plenty of used CR-Vs on the market in Northern Michigan. Look for models from 2016 and 2020-2022 for affordable and reliable buys, especially if you can get the 2016 for under $10,000.
The Best Overall Used SUV: Subaru Forester
While there are some close competitors, including the Kia Sorento and Toyota 4Runner, it’s tough to overlook the Forester. At any stoplight in Traverse City, you’ll likely spot at least one Forester, including many ten to fifteen years old. These all-wheel drive rides have excellent safety ratings and low maintenance costs - with regular tune-ups, you can count on 200,000 miles or more with your Forester!
