Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oil: Which Is Right for You?

Synthetic oil has been on the market for over five decades, but not all drivers opt for synthetic or semi-synthetic blends over conventional motor oil. While synthetic oil is generally considered better for most engines, choosing the right product depends on your vehicle's make and model and your typical driving conditions.

Learn a bit more about both types of automotive oil and which is best for you.

What Is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is a man-made, engineered lubricant made from artificial chemicals. Most types of synthetics are made from distilled crude oil and modified with chemical materials. This level of bespoke engineering means synthetic motor oil has a leg up on conventional oil in a few key areas.

The Advantages of Synthetic Oil

Synthetics are the product of a thoroughly engineered and controlled process, which allows them to outperform conventional options in:

  • High and low temperatures

  • Superior fuel economy

  • Longer-lasting performance

  • Reduced sludge and deposit build-up

The Disadvantages of Synthetic Oil

There are some disadvantages to synthetics, including:

  • Slightly lower fuel efficiency at highway speeds

  • Some additives may separate from oil in cold conditions

  • Price

Why Is Synthetic Oil So Expensive?

Synthetic motor oil costs more because of the complex manufacturing process required to engineer, make, and deliver synthetics. Brands also spend a lot more money on research and development and marketing and compete more fiercely for retail space than most conventional oils.

What Is Conventional Oil?

Conventional motor oil is derived from crude oil and thoroughly refined to achieve ideal characteristics. Because it’s easier to produce than synthetic oil, conventional oil is usually less expensive and may be better suited for older vehicles.

The Advantages of Conventional Oil

To be clear, conventional oil definitely works, and it’s significantly less expensive than synthetics. It’s a great option for older vehicles and is widely available, including here at Garfield Auto.

The Disadvantages of Conventional Oil

There are some drawbacks to choosing conventional, including:

  • Shorter lifespan, which means more frequent oil changes

  • Poor performance and protection in extreme hot or cold temperatures

  • Lower fuel economy during in-town driving

  • Increased engine wear, especially if not replaced on schedule

Can you mix synthetic and regular oil?

Technically, you can, but manufacturers and automotive technicians strongly advise against it. Mixing synthetic and conventional oil may reduce the protective benefits of both types. The mixed compound will be less stable and may have adverse chemical interactions that damage engine components. Unless it’s an emergency top-off to get you to your next oil change, it’s better not to mix oil types.
