Are BMW Repairs More Expensive?

BMWs are purportedly more expensive to own and more expensive to repair. Are BMWs expensive to fix in reality? As Traverse City’s go-to automotive garage for BMW repairs, we’ve got insight into all things BMW.

BMW Automotive Repairs: Are They Really More Expensive?

First, it’s worth noting that the most expensive car to repair is one that isn’t regularly maintained. No matter the make or model, preventative maintenance is the most cost-effective way to keep your car or truck repair bills in check.

BMW makes 16 different models. Some have notable quirks, such as the BMW X5’s penchant for stalling and its roof leaking.

As a luxury foreign car manufacturer, BMWs do tend to be more expensive to fix – but it’s more of an issue when they aren’t well maintained.

BMW Recommended Maintenance Plan

New and leased BMW owners should always follow the recommended maintenance schedule, which includes regular service appointments with your local BMW dealer. These appointments are recommended at different intervals:

  • Every 10,000 miles of 2 years

  • Every 30,000 miles

  • Every 60,000 miles

In most cases, BMW warranties end around 60,000 miles. That’s usually when BMW drivers start trusting Garfield Auto for the BMW repairs.

Are BMWs Reliable?

According to RepairPal, BMW earns a reliability rating of 2.5 our of 5, which is near the bottom of all manufacturers. Of the 32 international automotive companies included on the site, BMW ranks 30th.

That isn’t the only opinion on the subject, however. J.D. Power Vehicle ranks BMW as the eighth most reliable manufacturer, putting BMW ahead of Audi, Cadillac and Jaguar.

BMW Repair Costs Over 10 Years

BMW owners pay an average of $17,800 in repairs over the first 10 years of ownership. The second-most expensive brand, Mercedes-Benz, is $4,900 less expensive to maintain over the same period. Toyota and Honda are the two least expensive cars to own over this same period.
